THE PRICE OF DUPLICITY:

The Journey to Authenticity

By Ruth Ross, D.C.

Healthcare Professional | Integrative Health Practitioner

For decades Ruth Ross maintained that divide — a public portrayal carefully held in place while a secret life ran beneath it. The price was everything her authentic self needed to grow: the freedom to be fully known, the energy to act from an undivided center, the capacity to receive help without exposing what lay beneath the surface.

This is not a book about surviving adversity. It is a book about finally becoming whole.

Written from nearly five decades of clinical practice and hard-won personal experience, The Price of Duplicity is a hybrid memoir and clinical framework that addresses the universal cost of living divided — and what becomes possible when the two parts of a life finally integrate.

If you have ever maintained a public portrait while guarding a secret life — and paid the price — this book is for you.

A Taste of the Book

It was early October of 2004, almost four months since I had said yes to Greg's fifth proposal. This being my third marriage I wanted to get it right. I knew that the three key issues in marriage were God, money and children; and Dave Ramsey added in-laws. Yes I knew that the first go around but at that time I believed not objecting meant agreement… I was smarter now. So as I was departing from my future husband’s home I paused at the door and announced that we should have a conversation about God ensuring we were on the same page. I inquired when he might have a couple of hours for us to discuss our views. Of course, I knew that since he rarely offered up a full sentence that I would do the bulk of the talking, mostly in the form of questions that for some reason made him feel like he was being interrogated. An odd perspective from my point of view (at that time).

Well knock my socks off if he didn’t immediately respond with “Do you believe that Jesus is your personal Lord and Savior?” Not a moments hesitation, not a stumble or the usual ambiguous mumble, no, just a straight out statement of inquiry. Sensing that this could be a deal breaker I did what every woman who wanted her man might do in similar circumstances: I lied. Not with real forethought but with survival instincts I said “Yes, of course.” To which he replied “I think that pretty much covers it.” Now, had I been quick on my feet I would have called a meeting for number two on the list: money. Instead I feebly nodded and left without another word. His attention went back to football; I had a bigger problem.

Once out the door, I looked to Heaven and pleaded with God “Please don’t make me a liar, make me believe; I want to believe but You know I have doubts.”
